Breaking Benjamin’s Phobia

First off, I have to say this is a personal favorite of mine. I never got into Breaking Benjamin’s other albums like I did for this one. This is one of those “listen all the way through” albums (providing you’re in the right mood; it’s not for a sunny day, that’s for sure). I’ll go through the track listing:
1. Intro (there’s no point in reviewing an intro 30-50 second filler track
2. The Diary of Jane 10/10
This is the song that started it for me, besides the acoustic version of this song, which I’ll cover in a minute. This was the lead single, the song that REALLY put Breaking Benjamin on the map. Great song, great riff, great lyrics. Very mysterious.
3. Breath 9/10
Another great song. This is the second song from this album I got into. It’s more anger, though.
4. You 10/10
Fantastic song. The chorus is very haunting. I can’t remember if any yelling ends up in this song, but I don’t think it does. It’s a softer song for Breaking Benjamin.
5. Evil Angel 10/10
Evil Angel gets 10/10 because of the imagery. Awesome imagery is painted in your mind of an evil angel (I believe the front cover is a reference to this song). Great hook and a great riff.
6. Until the End 10/10
It’s a sad song, but it’s wonderful. It brings a positive message, somewhat. Why give up? Why give in?
7. Dance with the Devil 10/10
I get addicted to this song easily. The chorus is so damn catchy. It’ll get stuck in your head.
8. Topless 7/10
It’s a good song, but I never cared for all the cursing, myself. I can tell it was written prior to the other songs, since it doesn’t carry as powerful a message or image. Still not a bad song.
9. Here We Are 9/10
Similar to You and Dance with the Devil, putting it in good company. Another great song. I particularly like the solo in this song
10. Unknown Soldier 10/10
I give it 10/10 for more amazing imagery. Seeing in black and white ties with war and violence. The imagery is powerful.
11. Had Enough 8/10
It’s a decent song. More anger, though.
12. You Fight Me 11/10
Arguably the best song on the album. The song starts off with a very strange sound, but it culminates into this amazing chorus.
13. Outro 10/10
Very dark and very brooding.
14. The Diary of Jane (Acoustic) 11/10 (Collector’s Edition Exclusive)
The piano, the cello, and vocals replace all other instruments. This version turns a somewhat angry song into something far more sombre and heartbreaking.
Go buy it. And don’t kid yourself with the normal version. Go get the Collector’s Edition so you have the acoustic Diary of Jane. Fantastic album.
Overall score 9/10
